Rick Latham stands as one of the most influential and respected drummers, educators and
performers of our time. A true architect of modern funk and fusion drumming. His
groundbreaking book, Advanced Funk Studies, revolutionized the way drummers approached
groove, technique, and feel, becoming a global standard in drum education. A decade later,
Contemporary Drum Set Techniques continued that legacy, expanding rhythmic vocabulary for
generations of players. Throughout his illustrious career, Rick has performed and recorded with
legends such as B.B. King, Quincy Jones, Edgar Winter, country icon Juice Newton and blues
legend Mac Arnold, showcasing his versatility across genres. With his own group, as a leader, he
continues to bring high-energy funk, blues, and jazz to stages across the globe.
Rick earned his Bachelor’s of Music/Percussion Degree from East Carolina University, where he
studied with Harold Jones. He was then granted a Full Scholarship - Teaching Assistantship to The University of North Texas, teaching snare drum technique and marimba, studying with Jim Hall, Ron Fink, Robert Schietroma and Henry Okstel, while pursuing his Master’s Degree in Percussion.
While attending North Texas, Rick was a featured member performing in the infamous Lab Bands, Symphony Orchestra and Percussion Ensembles. His versatility has also been highlighted on the theme for television's 9 TO 5 series, FAME, a QUINCY-produced soundtrack, FAST FORWARD and more recently, GONE IN 60 SECONDS, DAREDEVIL and SPIDERMAN.
As Rick celebrates these remarkable milestones—45 years of Advanced Funk Studies and 35
years of Contemporary Drum Set Techniques—he’s not slowing down. His upcoming “Still
Funky” Tour of Clinics and Masterclasses and Concert Performances will bring his timeless
groove, infectious energy, unmatched insight and timeless wisdom to drummers
everywhere.
